HC Deb 02 March 1964 vol 690 c176W
Sir Richard Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for War what is the wastage by discharge from the British Army of the Rhine; and what proportion of recently enlisted men is discharged in the first 12 months of their engagement.

Mr. Ramsden

The number discharged from the British Army of the Rhine in 1963 for any reason, including normal termination of their engagement, was about 4,500.

In the Army as a whole about 28 per cent. of recruits waste out in the first 12 months of their engagement, but about two-thirds of these go in the first three months of their engagement.

In 1963, the wastage in the Army as a whole was 8.8 per cent., compared with 9 per cent. in 1962.
