HL Deb 29 June 1964 vol 259 cc501-2WA
THE EARL OF HARROWBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the fact that new maps cannot keep pace with the new roads round London, all roundabouts could be given names, to be put on large boards facing all the approaches, together with the names of the roads they enter such as "… By-pass", since all these new roads look so much alike that it is very hard for a driver to locate his position and hence delay is caused, and even congestion at times, by enquiry, et cetera.

LORD CHESHAM

The names of certain well known junctions, e.g., Tibbetts Corner, are already shown on signs and, in cases where names are widely known, this practice is recommended in the Worboys Report. It will be followed on trunk roads and might well be adopted by other highway authorities.

The use of names artificially created for this purpose, or of local significance only, is not, however, the best way to give directions to the motoring public.

When the new traffic signs are introduced following the implementation of the Worboys Report there will be a very great improvement in the indications given to drivers.

House adjourned at seven minutes past six o'clock.
