HC Deb 17 June 1964 vol 696 c191W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what information has been received about Major Macey and Driver Platt; what steps are being taken to find them; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Thorneycroft

Major Macey has been serving on the Headquarters staff of the United Nations Force in Cyprus, and has been engaged on liaison work with Dr. Kutchuk on behalf of the U.N. headquarters. This task took him away from the main body of the U.N. Force on frequent occasions. On 8th June it was reported that he had disappeared together with Driver Platt who had been driving him.

Widespread searches and inquiries have since been pursued by the United Nations in Cyprus and by the British authorities there, and they are still continuing. I am sorry to say that they have so far produced no trace of either of the missing men.

The British High Commissioner has been instructed to represent to the Cyprus authorities the serious view we take of this matter.
