HC Deb 16 June 1964 vol 696 c172W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Minister of Health how many public health inspectors are employed by local authorities in England and Wales; and what steps are now being taken to remedy the shortage, particularly in view of extra responsibilities that will devolve on inspectors following the enactment of the Housing Act 1964.

Mr. Braine

Information is not available centrally, but the number is estimated at about 5,000. The Public Health Inspectors' Education Board is at present engaged upon a re-assessment of the current position and future needs with the help of the local authority associations, but the results are not yet available.
