§ 47. Mr. Pagetasked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement as to the circumstances leading to the resignation of Brigadier MacWilliam from his appointment with the South Arabian Federation Army to which he had been seconded.
§ Mr. ThorneycroftI understand that Brigadier MacWilliam was concerned at what he regarded as shortcomings in the arrangements for the control and administration of the force under his command. He resigned after holding the appointment only for a matter of days. As I understand it, the main cause of his dissatisfaction was that the problems resulting from the transfer of administrative responsibility to the Federal Authorities on 1st April, 1964, had not yet been adequately dealt with, and that he therefore regarded his personal position as Commander as unsatisfactory.
66Wgeneral rule that accommodation may not be retained for longer than three years, but this may be waived in certain circumstances.
