Coalburn and Douglas are in the Lesmahagow Employment Exchange area and Douglaswater and Forth in the Lanark Employment Exchange area. The estimated number of male employees in employment in the coalmining industry in the Lesmahagow and Lanark Employment Exchange areas were 1,600 and 1,600, respectively, at mid-1959 and 1,000 and 1,100, respectively, at mid-1963, the latest date for which figures are available.
