Mr. W. T. Rodgers

asked the Minister of Transport what was the original estimated construction cost per mile of the London-Birmingham M.1 motorway; what was the actual construction cost per mile incurred; and what is the present estimated construction cost per mile of the north-west extension of M.1 for which tenders have been let, excluding in each case the cost of acquiring land.

The original estimated construction cost of the main section of the London-Birmingham motorway' was £321,000 per mile. The actual construction cost, including the cost of repairs and improvements carried out and authorised to bring the motorway up to current design standards, is £431,000 per mile; this figure is subject to settlement of outstanding claims.

The estimated construction cost of the Crick-Stanton section of the northward extension of M.1, for which tenders have been let, is £680,000 per mile.

In each case the costs of administration and land are excluded.
