HC Deb 01 July 1964 vol 697 c216W
62 and 63. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Transport (1) in view of the increasing use by holidaymakers by car and motor coach of the A.2 trunk road from London to the south-east resorts and Channel ports, what has been the outcome of his consideration of the problem of the abuse of lay-bys so as to remedy the present hazards to health during the warm weather and the holiday season;

(2) if, in the consideration he is giving to the provision of elementary sanitary facilities in lay-bys, he will take account of the fact that at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 6th June, 18 motor coaches and many private cars were parked within the 200–300-yards length of the tree- and bush-lined grass verge on the A.2 trunk road, in the vicinity of the Laughing Water Restaurant, a part much used by holiday-makers.

94. Mr. Hilton

asked the Minister of Transport what has been the result of his consideration of the abuse of lay-bys, and the provision of public conveniences on trunk roads.

Mr. Marples

I recognise the seriousness of this problem which is a difficult one. It raises issues which go beyond the strict scope of highway responsibilities. We have had a useful report from the Automobile Association about conditions along A.1 and from the County Councils' Association a comprehensive survey of the position on trunk roads in rural areas. We are studying their suggestions and will announce our conclusions as we can.
