§ Dr. Brayasked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance how many unemployed people were receiving 14W National Assistance, at the last convenient dates in Great Britain as a whole, the Northern Region, and Tees-side, comprising Middlesbrough, Stockton, and Thornaby, respectively; and, of these, what percentages were having their grants limited by the wages stop, respectively.
§ Mrs. ThatcherThe figures at the end of 1963 were as follows:
— Unempolyed persons receiving assistance Percentage with grants limited by wage-stop Great Britain 184,900 12.7 Northern Region 27,400 15.5 Tees-side 3,700 — The figure for Tees-side relates to the Middlesbrough (West), Middlesbrough (East) and Stockton-on-Tees offices of the Board. There is a practical difficulty in estimating the percentage of wage-stop cases for this comparatively small area, and I am writing to the hon. Member about this.
