The increase in tax receipts is mainly the result of rising incomes and consumers' expenditure and the progressive nature of the income tax. Since 1951 personal incomes have risen by almost 100 per cent. and consumers expenditure by over 80 per cent. During the same period rates of personal Income Tax and Purchase Tax have been substantially reduced.
