HC Deb 04 February 1964 vol 688 c141W
Q12. Mr. Awbery

asked the Prime Minister, in view of the recent events in Tanganyika, Kenya and Uganda, if he will propose to the United Nations the establishment of a special international force to be held ready to assist countries who request external aid in dealing with breakdowns in law and order, so obviating the need for unilateral military assistance.

The Prime Minister

No. We have expressed support on a number of occasions for the principle of a permanent international force. The creation of such a force is, of course, an essential element of the West's disarmament plans. But proposals for the immediate creation of a permanent peace-keeping force are not practicable as the Secretary-General of the United Nations has said.
