§ Mr. Ellis Smithasked the President of the Board of Trade what estimate he has made of the prospects of increasing exports to China; and what action he has taken to increase exports to China since the success of the British Exhibition in Peking.
§ Mr. JayThere are encouraging prospects for British exports to China, and I hope to see steadily rising sales, particularly of goods used in the heavy industrial and engineering fields. The British Industrial Exhibition will, I believe, lead to a sustained export drive 273W in the Chinese market; and I am in close touch with industry, through the Sino-British Trade Council, about plans for follow-up action. The services of my Department are available to firms seeking to do business with China.
