Mr. Conlanasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received from watch committees, local authorities and local authority associations in connection with the amendment of Section 2 of the Police Act, 1964, dealing with the appointment of magistrates to watch committees; and what reply he has sent.

SoskiceI have received representations on this matter from the Association of Municipal Corporations, from eight watch committees or local authorities, and from one political group of a local authority. I have told them that while I have considered their views as sympathetically as possible I can hold out no prospect of legislation to repeal this provision.
