HC Deb 14 December 1964 vol 704 cc3-4W
27. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs if he will instruct the United Kingdom representative at the United Nations to support the desire of the Chinese People's Government to achieve full membership of the United Nations.

Mr. George Thomson

Yes.

28. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs what recent progress has been made in improving official relations with the Chinese People's Government; and if he will arrange that ambassadors shall be appointed to represent both governments in London and Peking.

Mr. George Thomson

The most recent step was the visit of my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade to Peking to open the British Industrial Exhibition. The appointment of Ambassadors does not depend on Her Majesty's Government alone. We proposed an exchange of Ambassadors to the Chinese in 1962 but they rejected it. When my right hon. Friend was in Peking he told the Chinese that we considered such an exchange would be beneficial, but their position was unchanged.
