HC Deb 27 April 1964 vol 694 c24W
Mr. Buck

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations and the Colonies whether Her Majesty's Government will make a contribution to relieve distress caused by the recent cyclone in East Pakistan.

Mr. Sandys

As a result of a cyclone which hit the Narail and Magura subdivisions of Jessore district of East Pakistan on 11th April, some 300 people were killed, many more injured and there was extensive damage. I am sure that the House will wish to join with me in expressing our sincere sympathy to the people of East Pakistan.

As a practical indication of sympathy Her Majesty's Government have offered a token gift of £2,500 for the purchase of clothing to relieve distress.

Parliament will be asked, in due course, to approve a Supplementary Estimate. In the meantime an advance has been made from the Civil Contingencies Fund.
