§ Mrs. Whiteasked the Minister of Education what estimate he has made of the gross cost of discontinuing the parental means test for universities and comparable awards and of allowing for the simultaneous discontinuation of Income Tax allowances.
§ Sir E. BoyleThe answer to the first part of the Question is approximately £6,451,000 based on statistics for England and Wales for the academic year 1962–63. I am advised by the Board of Inland Revenue that the answer to the second part is about £4,500,000 on the assumption that the parent loses the Income Tax child allowance for the same number of tax years as academic years covered by the course.
