§ Mr. Brockwayasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how the British delegate to the United Nations voted on the motion to set up a sub-committee to report on the situation in Aden and the Aden Protectorates; and what decision has been reached on the recommendation that the present legislative bodies be dissolved and elections held on the basis of universal suffrage.
§ Mr. R. A. ButlerThe British Representative voted against the resolution adopted by the Committee of Twenty-Four on 3rd May, providing for the establishment of a Sub-Committee. He also voted against the Committee's resolution of 19th July, containing the recommendation mentioned. This recommendation is unacceptable to the British Government for reasons which were explained to the Committee by our representative on 15th and 19th July and which are reproduced in the relevant United Nations verbatim records in the Library of the House.
