HC Deb 21 November 1963 vol 684 c125W
56. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what specific defence and economic responsibilities have been accepted by Her Majesty's Government in respect of the Federation of Malaysia and of the Protectorate of Brunei, respectively; and what is the extent of diplomatic representation of Her Majesty's Government in each territory.

Mr. Sandys

The British Government's undertakings to assist in Malaysia's defence are set out in the Agreement on External Defence and Mutual Assistance between the British Government and the Government of the Federation of Malaya of 12th October, 1957, published as Cmnd. 263. By virtue of Article VI of the Agreement relating to Malaysia (Cmnd. 2094), these apply to all the territories of Malaysia.

As regards British financial assistance to Malaysia, both defence aid and economic aid, I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the Question of the hon. Member for Tonbridge (Mr. Hornby) on 18th July.

Under an Agreement made with the Sultan in 1959, Her Majesty's Government is responsible for the defence and external affairs of the Protected State of Brunei.

Britain is represented in Malaysia by a High Commissioner, and appropriate staff. In Brunei, there is a High Commissioner appointed in accordance with the agreement made with the Sultan in 1959.
