§ Mr. Awberyasked the Minister of Labour if he is aware of the indifference shown by some employers towards safety 138W precautions; in view of the increasing number of industrial accidents, if he will take steps to ensure stricter supervision; and if he will enable the regulations to be enforced by increasing the number of factory inspectors to bring them up to strength.
§ Mr. GodberWith the co-operation of the British Employers' Confederation and Trades Union Congress I am making every effort to improve the general standard of accident prevention throughout industry. H.M. Inspectors of Factories will continue to enforce the law but legislation and its enforcement cannot be fully effective without the fullest co-operation from industry itself in providing proper training and supervision and safe methods of work.
The size of the Factory Inspectorate has been considerably increased in recent years and the General Inspectorate, apart from the extra staff being recruited for enforcement of the Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act, is now virtually up to strength.
