§ Brigadier Clarkeasked the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, in view of the recent statements concerning the encouragement of research in industry, to what extent it is intended that the British companies engaged on research work on nuclear marine propulsion will be paid for their contributions; and what financial encouragement is offered to British companies engaged on research work in the field of nuclear marine propulsion.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterI am informed by the Atomic Energy Authority that the extent to which they place contracts and pay for research, design and development work on nuclear marine propulsion is determined by the relevance of the work to the Government's marine reactor research programme and the funds available for this purpose. Currently, expenditure under such contracts is approximately £200,000 a year.
