§ 51. Mr. Callaghanasked the Minister of Transport if he will give the latest figure of accidents on the section of Newport. Road between the foot of Rumney Hill, Cardiff, and St. Mellons;and what steps he is taking to improve the traffic conditions along this section of Newport. Road.
§ Mr. GalbraithThe responsibility for improving this road rests with the highway authority, the Cardiff City Council. To help them, we have issued grant towards the improvement of the section from Wentloog Road to Mount Pleasant Avenue, and included the improvement of the New Road to Wentloog Road section in our programme. The number of accidents reported to the police was as follows:

§ 60. Mr. Callaghanasked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that three accidents in three weeks have successively resulted in damage to Nos. 653, 655 and 657 Newport Road, Rumney Hill, Cardiff, and that the volume of traffic is constantly increasing; and if he will reconsider his decision not to proceed with the Eastern Avenue bypass until 1968–70.

§ Mr. GalbraithThe two important schemes that the Cardiff City Council are to undertake with grant assistance from us should do much to improve the safety of Newport Road. We expect work to start on the Eastern Avenue bypass in 1967, but we cannot advance it any further.
