HC Deb 29 May 1963 vol 678 cc157-9W
Mrs. Hart

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what is the population target of each new town in England and Wales; and to what extent this represents planned immigration and natural growth, respectively.

Mr. Corfield

The following table shows in respect of each of the new towns in England and Wales— and what proportion of Dorset County Council's expenditure is represented by the total grants for each year.

Mr. Corfield

The following is the information requested:

  1. (a) the original population;
  2. (b) the "target" population, i.e., the figure at which large-scale immigration will cease;
  3. (c) the expected ultimate population after allowing for natural increase.

Crawley and Hemel Hempstead became the responsibility of the Commission for the New Towns on 1st April 1962 when their populations were 56,000 and 58,000 respectively. The towns are expected to grow by natural increase to 75,000 and 80,000, respectively. The original populations were 10.000 and 21,000.
