Mr. Lubbock

asked the Secretary of State for Air to what extent, in each command, married personnel are permitted to retain their own furniture in married quarters; what removal expenses are allowed; and what steps have been taken to inform service families of these arrangements.

Under a scheme introduced early this year occupants of married quarters in the United Kingdom may now return any unwanted Service furniture and furnishings, except carpets and curtains, and use their own instead. They may claim removal expenses up to one quarter of the normal entitlement for a move into unfurnished accommodation.

The scheme was published in station routine orders and families bulletins. We are now considering whether it might be extended to overseas commands.

asked the Secretary of State for Air what advice is sought from wives of Royal Air Force officers and men about the equipment provided in married quarters.

The views of the users of equipment in married quarters are obtained in a number of ways. For example, kitchen equipment has been put on exhibition and user opinion sought. New designs of furniture are being supplied to selected quarters for the occupants to try out and give their views.

Of course it is more usually the officer or the airman who is asked officially for his views but we have no doubt that he adequately represents to us the views of his wife.
