asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many young people aged 16 and 17 years Were remanded in prison in the latest convenient year to await a sitting of a higher court with a view to a Borstal sentence, or to await transfer to Borstal after being sentenced; and how many were in prison from two to four weeks, four to six weeks, six to eight weeks and over eight weeks, respectively.

796 of the boys aged 16 or 17 received under sentence of borstal training had spent a period in a local prison before being sentenced. 1,176 boys of those ages spent a period in a local prison after sentence awaiting removal to a borstal allocation centre.

The periods were as follows:
