HC Deb 28 March 1963 vol 674 c190W
Sir Richard Glyn

asked the Minister of Education what is the cost of training a man teacher; and what is the average length of service given by him up to the age of 25 years, and between the ages of 25 and 30, respectively; and what are the differences between these figures and the corresponding figures for women teachers.

Sir E. Boyle

A three-year course at a teacher training college, for a man or woman student, costs about £2,000. The following table, based on the latest available wastage figures for 1960–61, shows the average length of service, over the periods specified by the hon. Member, for two-year trained non-graduate teachers:

Average Length of Service of Teachers
(Years)
Men Women
Up to age 25 2.8 3.2
Between 25 and 30 3.9 1.8
Total service to age 30 6.7 5.0

These figures are based on typical ages of entry to teaching of 21 for a woman and 22 for a man. From next September the great majority of new teachers will have trained for three years and will enter teaching a year older. The figures shown in the table will thus not be applicable to those teachers.
