HC Deb 27 March 1963 vol 674 c163W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Minister of Transport (1) what was the mileage of roads built, up to the latest available date, which consist of six traffic lanes; and how many miles will be built by the end of 1967;

(2) what was the mileage of new roads built since 1958, and to the latest available date, which consist of four traffic lanes; and how many miles will be built by the end of 1967.

Mr. Marples

Following is the information requested for all-purpose trunk roads and trunk road motorways. The estimated additional mileages to be built by the end of 1967 are approximate since they will depend upon the availability of funds and the completion of the necessary statutory processes.

Miles
SIX-LANE HIGHWAYS:
Built at 25th March, 1963 72 (Motorways)
28½ (Trunk Roads)
Estimated to be built in addition by 1967. 220 (Motorways)
30 (Trunk Roads)
FOUR-LANE HIGHWAYS:
Built from 1958 to 25th March, 1963. 121 (Motorways)
213 (Trunk Roads)
Estimated to be built in addition by 1967. 100 (Motorways)
225 (Trunk Roads)

For classified and unclassified roads, all of which are the direct responsibility of the local highway authorities, complete information is not available. For the purposes of comparison, however, on 31st March, 1958, 243 miles of dual carriageway on these roads were open to traffic; on 31st March, 1962, 307 miles were open, with a further 17 miles under construction. The great majority of these consisted of dual two-lane classified roads.
