HC Deb 27 March 1963 vol 674 cc158-9W
63. Mr. Hoy

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware of the shortage of geriatric beds in the southeastern region, the number of persons at present on the waiting list, and the average time a person has to wait before securing admittance; and what steps he is taking to provide the additional accommodation required.

Mr. Noble

I am aware of the shortage. There are at present 604 persons on the waiting list, but figures of the average waiting time are not available. Two new 60-bed geriatric units are under construction in Fife, a 32-bed assessment unit is being provided for the Borders, and an extension to Liberton Hospital is planned to start next year. The Regional Hospital Board is also urgently considering how more beds for geriatric patients can be provided by redeployment of existing resources.
