§ 37. Sir B. Jannerasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that expenditure on roads, expressed in percentages of gross national product, is 2.2 in Germany and 1.2 in France; and whether, in view of the serious unemployment position and the need for improved road services for commercial and private purposes, he will increase the 0.8 per cent. of such expenditure at present prevailing in Great Britain.
§ Mr. HayWe do not think that any particular percentage of the gross national product should be used as a criterion of what should be spent on roads in this or any other country. Many factors must be taken into account. The44W important thing is that our road programme is already large and is rapidly expanding.
