§ 46. Mr. Spriggsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many sixth-form students, having qualified for a university place, have been unsucessful in their efforts to enter a university in each of the last five years and up to the latest convenient date; whether there has been an increase or decrease in the number of students entering universities in each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterI regret that information in the form requested is not available. There was an increase in the number of university entrants in each of the years 1957, 1958, 1960, 1961 and 1962; the total increase between 1957 and 1962 was 5,119 (or about (18.5 per cent.). As I said in the Debate on 17th July, an increasing percentage of the relevant age group have been able to find university places; and the Government's plans provide for the continuation of this process.
