Mr. Jay

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a statement on the Government's policy relating to the jute industry.

Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) if he will make a statement on the meetings between the Minister of State and the United Kingdom jute manufacturing industry;

(2) what is the present policy of Her Majesty's Government with regard to the safeguarding of the United Kingdom jute industry.

Mr. Erroll

The Board of Trade's policy remains to provide an adequate and substantial measure of protection for the jute industry in the interest of employment in Dundee. The present discussions which my hon. Friend the Minister of State is having with representatives of employers and workers in the jute industry are confidential and I do not propose to say anything more at present.
