HC Deb 25 July 1963 vol 681 cc219-20W
68. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the First Secretary of State whether he will make available the findings of the commission of inquiry into rioting on the Northern Rhodesian copper belt; and whether he will now make a statement.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The Commission of Inquiry is still sitting and the subject it is inquiring into is, therefore, sub-judice, but I will make its findings available at the appropriate time.

70. Mr. Turton

asked the First Secretary of State what steps have been taken to restrain the activities of the Zambia police in Northern Rhodesia and to preserve law and order on the copperbelt.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The Governor informs me that the activities of the "Zambia Police" are mainly concerned with providing stewards for public meetings of the United National Independence Party. When they exceed these functions prosecutions are instituted if their actions break the law. I have no reason to believe that this organisation represents any threat to law and order which is being fully and ably maintained by the Northern Rhodesia Police.
