Mr. Ellis Smithasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consult the Commonwealth countries as a matter of urgency on the need to appoint a joint representative committee of inquiry into the need for increasing economic co-operation, the need for increasing output, and the problems which arise from overseas investment and the availability of credit.
§ Mr. Boyd-CarpenterI fully share the hon. Member's desire to see the fullest214W possible economic co-operation with Commonwealth countries. But as my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations pointed out on 25th April, machinery already exists for joint study by and consultation between Commonwealth Governments on economic problems. This is available to cover all the subjects mentioned by the hon. Member.
