HC Deb 24 July 1963 vol 681 cc193-4W
100. Sir W. Wakefield

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will give, for each of the last five years to the latest convenient date on an annual comparable basis, the number of applications received for enlistment in the Officers Training Corps, the number accepted, and the number refused; and if he will state in general terms the various reasons for refusal.

Mr. Godber

The following is the information asked for:

Year (a) (b)
1958 869 21
1959 736 20
1960 812 16
1961 861 24
1962 788 29

A precise record is kept of the number of applications which are accepted but not of those which are rejected: the figures in column (b) are therefore an estimate.

The main reason for the refusal of applications is failure to reach the required medical standard. Other reasons include failure to meet the provisions of the Territorial Army Regulations regarding eligibility and failure to satisfy the commanding officer of the contingent of suitability on a variety of grounds.
