HC Deb 23 July 1963 vol 681 cc158-9W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Labour what are the chief difficulties in finding suitable local employment for boys and for girls, respectively, in the Stornoway Employment Exchange area: and what measures are being taken to overcome these problems.

Mr. Hare

There is a general lack of employment openings for young people, but unemployment is higher among boys than girls. The facilities of the Local Employment Act are available in the area and the Government will continue their efforts to increase employment opportunities. Boys and girls unable to find suitable opening within reach of their homes may be assisted under the training allowances scheme to obtain progressive employment in Stornoway itself or on the mainland.
