HC Deb 23 July 1963 vol 681 c152W
Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science if he will order a study of the methods adopted in the United States of America for controlling diesel exhaust, with a view to determining whether they could be applied in this country.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

The Warren Spring Laboratory and the Motor Industries Research Association already maintain contact with the American position in this field. They are not aware of any practical devices that are effective in controlling pollution from diesel exhausts.

Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what action he will take by way of research or otherwise, to minimise the effects of diesel exhaust and to increase the promotion of engine efficiency, operation and maintenance.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

The real remedy to the problem of diesel exhaust fumes lies in correct maintenance and operation of engines. The Warren Spring Laboratory is collaborating with the Ministry of Transport in devising test procedures for roadside measurement of diesel exhaust smoke as an aid to enforcing the application of this remedy. The British Internal Combustion Engine Research Association, which is grant-aided by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, investigates, as part of its general research programme, means of improving the efficiency of diesel engines.
