HC Deb 22 July 1963 vol 681 cc141-2W
Mr. Hughes

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what steps he has taken or plans to take to protect purchasers from radioactive ingredients in their purchases.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

Different considerations arise according to the nature of the purchase. For example, as regards foods the Government's compre- hensive monitoring system has shown that there is at present no need for special measures. Measures have however been prepared to mitigate hazards that may arise in respect of food in the event of a nuclear accident or of an unforeseen rise in fall-out levels.

The Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee, established under the Radio active Substances Act, 1948, has for some years kept under surveillance the situation in regard to the sale to the public of miscellaneous sources of radiation such as luminous articles.
