HC Deb 17 July 1963 vol 681 c62W
68. Mr. Critchley

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty if he will institute a retraining scheme in Chatham Dockyard so that workers who become redundant within the next two years may be able to take advantage of such facilities.

Mr. Hay

I will bear my hon. Friend's suggestion in mind and will arrange for it to be discussed with the trades unions concerned.

69. Mr. Critchley

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty how many craftsmen have become redundant as a result of the plan to eliminate some 500 jobs over two years in Chatham Dockyard; and if he will consider allowing them to work as skilled labourers if they so wish and to continue to be paid at craftsmen's rates.

Mr. Hay

As regards the first part of the Question I have nothing at present to add to the statement I made on 29th May. The proposal in the second part of the Question is contrary to the principle of the rate for the job.
