HC Deb 17 July 1963 vol 681 cc63-4W
Mr. Bottomley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the rates of literacy among the African population of Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland, respectively; and how they compare with the rates 10 years ago.

Mr. Sandys

As literacy tests vary considerably, only broad approximations can be made. No figures are available for 1953 but the approximate percentages of literacy among Africans aged 10 years and over for 1956 and 1963 are as follows:

1956 1963
Basutoland 40 50
Bechuanaland Protectorate 25 40
Swaziland 25 33
