HC Deb 17 July 1963 vol 681 c64W
Mr. Bottomley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when it is proposed to move the administrative centre of Bechuanaland from Mafeking, which is situated in a foreign country, to a suitable place within Bechuanaland territory; and whether, in the meantime, he will take steps with a view to ensuring that all persons in Bechuanaland having reason to travel to Mafeking for official purposes are not prohibited from doing so by the Government of the Republic of South Africa.

Mr. Sandys

The move of the administrative headquarters of Bechuanaland from Mafeking to Gaberones is provisionally planned to begin in March, 1965.

The South African Government have now agreed that persons travelling from the Protectorate to Mafeking on official business will be treated as frontier traffic and their permits for entry to South Africa accordingly remain valid for periods of six months at a time.
