§ Mr. Roy Masonasked the Postmaster-General what research is being carried out by his Department to enable all television transmissions to be received on sets without an outside aerial; and, in view of the ugliness, nuisance and danger in gales of such aerials, if he will introduce legislation to abolish them in due course.
§ Mr. BevinsNo. An aerial of one sort sort or another is indispensable for the reception of television by radio; and to get a satisfactory picture, it must normally be situated outside on the roof above the level of the surrounding buildings. There is no reason now to suppose that this will cease to be so: indeed, with the introduction of UHF 33W transmissions, the need for outside aerials may well become even more general, though UHF aerials will usually be smaller than the present VHF aerials.
