HC Deb 16 July 1963 vol 681 c47W
Captain Elliot

asked the Minister of Transport what is his policy for the provision of pedestrian crossings in the fringes of the built-up area of Greater London; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Marples

My policy throughout the country is to ensure that pedestrian crossings are installed only where the traffic volume is large enough to cause real difficulty for pedestrians and where the number of pedestrians is sufficient to keep the crossing in regular use at most times of the day. When I have studied the report on the "Panda" crossing experiment I will consider whether this type of crossing would be suitable for use at sites where these conditions are not met.
