HC Deb 16 July 1963 vol 681 c30W
67. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Postmaster-General how many telephone subscribers there were in the City of Aberdeen during each of the last 10 years; how many applicants for telephones there are now on the waiting list; when he estimates they will all be supplied; how many public telephone call boxes have been converted from the old 4d. type to the new 3d. type of slot; and when the conversions will be completed.

Mr. Bevins

In the City of Aberdeen there are 37 people waiting for telephones, and a further 294 orders under enquiry or in course of being met. All waiting applications are in housing development areas where the speed of provision is dependent on the completion rate of houses and roads, but I expect those at present waiting to have service by the end of the year. All public telephone call boxes in the City have now been fitted with the new type of coin box.

The following are the numbers of subscribers for each of the last 10 years.

The figures are

31st March, 1954 15,651
31st March, 1955 16,323
31st March, 1956 16,975
31st March, 1957 18,412
31st March, 1958 18,556
31st March, 1959 18,793
31st March, 1960 19,152
31st March, 1961 19,917
31st March, 1962 20,400
31st March, 1963 20,820
