HC Deb 15 July 1963 vol 681 c9W
69. Mr. David James

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance if he will take steps to raise the savings disqualification limit above which a person cannot apply for National Assistance from £600 to £1,000.

Mrs. Thatcher

The present figure, which is of course additional to the one for war savings, was increased by 50 per cent. in 1959. A further increase would be of benefit only to people with substantial savings, unlike the increases in the basic assistance rates which have just come into effect, and my right hon. Friend has no proposals for such an increase.
