asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the total expenditure in the latest year for which figures are available of local authorities of all types upon public libraries; what was the number of authorities concerned; and what proportion of the total expenditure was absorbed by salaries.

Her Majesty's Government receive no returns of total expenditure by local authorities on public libraries. The Library Association publish certain annualStatistics of Public Libraries in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and I am sending the noble Baroness a copy of these statistics for 1960–61.
