asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will make a further statement about the proposed increase in the number of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Constabulary for England and Wales.

Her Majesty The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment as Inspectors of Constabulary of Mr. B. N. Bebbington, O.B.E., Chief Constable of Cambridge, Mr. A. U. R. Scroggie, O.B.E., Chief Constable of Northumberland, and Mr. J. T. Manuel, Commander, Metropolitan Police.

Mr. Bebbington and Mr. Scroggie will take up their duties shortly. Mr. Manuel will do so on 1st October next, when Mr. S. Lawrence, C.B.E., one of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Constabulary, will be seconded for duty as Commandant of the Police College in succession to Major-General R. W. Jelf, C.B.E. Major-General Jelf is being appointed, with effect from the same date, as Regional Director of Civil Defence, Southern Region, in place of Rear-Admiral Adams, C.B., O.B.E., who is retiring.
