§ 40. Mr. R. W. Elliottasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how far Government consideration has proceeded on giving ships as a form of overseas aid; and whether he will give an assurance that the contracts for building these ships will be open to competitive tender.
§ Mr. MaudlingIn considering how best to link additional aid to surplus productive capacity in this country, we have had constantly in mind the possibility of part of this aid being devoted to the purchase of ships. A number of proposals are currently being considered, but I cannot yet make a statement. I have no doubt that any contracts would be placed in the customary way.
