HC Deb 04 February 1963 vol 671 cc24-6W
Mr. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what is the limit on the amount that can be spent by a local authority on minor projects for the improvement of classified roads; and when was it fixed;

(2) what is the limit on the amount that can be spent by a local authority on major projects for the improvement of classified roads; and when was it fixed;

(3) what reply he has sent to the representations made by local authorities regarding the limits placed on expenditure on improvements of classified roads, on both minor and major projects.

Mr. Noble

The amount of work, major and minor, which can be carried out on classified roads is determined by the Exchequer grant available for approved schemes; and this in turn is determined by the proportion of the national resources which the Govern- ment consider can be devoted to the road programme in Scotland.

Replies to representations received from time to time on this subject are on these lines.
