Mr. Kelley

asked the Postmaster-General what is the ratio of public telephones to population within the rural districts of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Bevins

I am sorry that full information is not available, but for England and Wales the best estimates I can make are:

Rural districts: about 2 public telephones per 1,000 population;

Urban districts: about 1 public telephone per 1,000 population.
