HC Deb 11 December 1963 vol 686 c87W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Minister of Transport what is the approximate average of unused parking capacity in the Hyde Park and other publicly-built garages in London; and to what extent this unused parking space is due to the disparity between the charges imposed for garage and meter parking, respectively.

Mr. Marples

At the present time there are usually some 600 spaces in the Park Lane garage available on week days, and about 600 more in the other publicly-built garages in central London. A good deal of the unused space is due to parking meter spaces, which are at present cheaper than garages, being improperly and unfairly used by long-term parkers. The higher meter charges proposed in my Department's bookletParking—the Next Stage would encourage the proper division of use between meters and off-street car parks.
