asked the Minister of Transport what further action he intends to take to improve east-west road communications in the North-East.

Mr. Galbraith

The roads programme for the North-East, expanded as proposed in the recent White Paper, includes a number of substantial improvements of east-west routes in the area.

The following is the information:

The roads to be improved or provided are:—

The Newcastle-Tynemouth Coast Road.

A parallel route south of the River Tyne from Gateshead to South Shields comprising trunk road A. 184 from Gateshead to White Mare Pool and thence Leam Lane (A. 1055) and the new John Reid Road to South Shields where it will join trunk road A. 19 to Sunderland.

Connecting to this road at White Mare Pool will be a new link road from Blackfell on the Great North Road.

The A. 183 (including a section of new road) from the Durham Motorway to Sunderland.

The A. 177, A.689 and A.67 roads to provide better links from Darlington and the Durham Motorway to Tees-side.

The Tees-side Parkway providing connection from Lackenby Dock to trunk road A.19.

A new road from A.l to Team Valley Trading Estate and linking via the new Scotswood Bridge with the western part of Newcastle.

A link between the northern approach road to the Tyne Tunnel and the Great North Road at Wideopen.
